REDUCED FOLATES

Humans need to maintain an adequate dietary intake of folate during various stages of their lives. Relevant clinical research emphasizes the importance of folate supplementation in different therapeutic areas such as neural-tube defect, male and female infertility, spontaneous abortion, coronary heart disease, macrocytic anemia, methotrexate therapy.

Folate deficiency is related to the reduction of a cell's capacity to synthesize and repair DNA. Eating folate-rich foods may not provide the recommended daily dosage; thus the need for supplementation. In recent years evidence has shown that reduced folate supplementation present relevant advantages vs folic acid. The rational use of such reduced folates (particularly reduced and methylated) is derived from the inability of a part of world's population to assimilate and metabolize folic acid from food or supplements.

The multidisciplinary research team at Gnosis has intensely researched this category of products and today Gnosis is the only manufacturer of three folate products that can claim GRAS status and NDIN with advanced chemical and clinical characteristics.

The main supplementation of folates has been represented by folic acid but recent studies have shown that (6R,S) and (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate can be used as a valid alternative to folic acid, offering relevant advantages.

The biochemical pathways for the biotrasformation of folates involves a series of enzymatic reactions and cofactors. Absorbed folates are metabolized in intestinal mucosal cells though a reduction and methylation to (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate.

Extrafolate-S® is the calcium salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, and is suitable as a food ingredient.

Deficit of folate (a type of B vitamin) represents one of the most common forms of vitamin deficiency consequent on inadequate uptake, increasable needs (pregnancy and lactation, children growing), altered absorption and metabolism of drugs assumption.

Extrafolate-S® is the calcium salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid. It is intended for use as an alternative to folic acid in dietary supplements, foods for particular nutritional purposes and regular foods. It is the essential active form in which natural folates enter the human circulation, providing higher bioavailability and avoiding concerns about interaction between vitamin B12 and folic acid supplementation responsible for masking symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.
